Arco, is an elegant country town 5 kilometers far
from Garda Lake; it keeps unchanged the traces of past times rich
in history, whose roots has to be find in ancient ages. It is surrounded
by parks and gardens and enjoys a very mild climate, thanks to which
it became a famous winter health resort in the Nineteenth Century
for the Center European aristocracy.
The real renascence of the town was during the
following century; in the seventies the winter nursing resort was
built, thanks to the incentive of the Archduke of Austria Alberto,
cousin of the Emperor Francesco Giuseppe. He decided to settle his
winter abode in Arco, surrounded by a luxuriant park, full of Mediterranean
and exotic trees. During that period were built hotels, villas,
gardens and nursing resorts but also places of amusement. A cosmopolite
crowd of aristocrats and middle-class people used to spend their
winters in Arco, enjoying its climate.
Nowadays Arco still keeps those features that fascinated
the first travelers; it has the charming savor of those places where
the austerity of manor-houses full of history is coupled with masterly
skill together with the gentleness of a beautiful landscape, surrounded
by mellow hills covered by olive-trees, enriched by gardens and
parks: a deep emotion that the modern tourist could tell and keep
inside his heart.
